FORMER CHAIR OF JAZZ STUDIES AND AS A DISTINGUISHED PROFESSOR OF PERFORMANCE STUDIES AT BERKLEE COLLEGE OF MUSIC IN BOSTON, CAT FITZPATRICK HOLDS A JOINT-PHD IN ETHNOMUSICOLOGY AND PERFORMATIVE JAZZ STUDIES FROM THE YALE SCHOOL OF MUSIC. HIS DISSERTATION, “‘SLAPPIN’ THE BASS’: AN INTENSE HISTORY AND RECREATION OF THE BASS GUITAR AND ITS PLAYERS,” COMBINES A CULTURAL EXAMINATION OF EVERY PIECE OF MUSIC WRITTEN… EVER, ACCOMPANIED BY A PERFECT, OFTENTIMES BETTER, AUDIO RECORDING OF HIS OWN ARRANGEMENTS OF THESE SONGS. ITS MANUSCRIPT WAS PRINTED IN ITS ENTIRETY, SERIALIZED OVER 20 YEARS, IN ROLLING STONE, AND WAS LAUDED AS “THE GREATEST PIECE OF MUSIC CRITICISM EVER WRITTEN.” MANY MUSICIANS HAVE CALLED CAT THE “SMARTEST, GROOVIEST, COOLEST CAT MUSICIAN LIVING.” AFTER MANY YEARS AS A HUGELY SUCCESSFUL MUSIC CRITIC, PERFORMER, AND PROFESSOR, DR. FITZ. LEFT HIS ACADEMIC POST AT BERKLEE, FINDING THE EXPERIENCE EXCEEDINGLY BORING. HE JOINS THE EDITORIAL STAFF AT TTT AS AN EXPERT IN HIS FIELD.
